Roam in Rome

I think i have officially killed any following i might have once had on this here blog. My deepest apologies to any who have been patiently awaiting the next post after this long draught. Let me summarize what the last few weeks have consisted of for me. You see it began with design week starting the 17th of april. A week long fair during which the city of Milan comes alive with the largest design fair in the world. Being that I major in the sort I was very busy seeing the hustle and bustle around town. Shortly after this craze of a week I was blessed with a stream of visitors both friends and family. Lastly i spent a week in Istanbul visiting a close friend Ari Lombardi after which i flew to Rome to meet up with my parents. Since I’ve returned back “home” here in Milan I have been working on finishing up the semester long street food project and organizing the last month I have in europe. All in all a very full past few weeks. So today, i thank you all for your patients and present you with another piece which grew out of procrastination of a separate project.

Enjoy!

Richard Serra and the motion of sculpture.

Today I started looking back to old forms of inspiration. I was working on my design for a restaurant and struggling. Looking four years back I resurfaced the PBS art 21 series. The interviews and mini narratives they do with artists is extremely engaging. Through watching a select episode I became increasingly intrigued with the art of Richard Serra who creates grand scale “sculptures”  that can take your breath away.

Richard Serra’s work since the 1960s has focused on the industrial materials that he had worked with as a youth in West Coast steel mills and shipyards: steel and lead. Serra’s work is known for it’s immense physicality, compounded by the breathtaking bends and curves of steel plates that carve private moment out of public spaces.

Below are some screenshots from his art 21 interview. Highly recommended!
